Planning basics
How much life insurance does a business owner need?
List your family needs, business debt, buyout funding and key person exposure separately before adding anything up.
Then check which of those needs each existing policy already covers. Most mistakes come from counting the same need twice.
Who this is for
- Owners with overlapping personal and business obligations
- Anyone with several policies bought for different reasons
One policy can’t always do several jobs
A policy assigned to a lender, earmarked for a buyout, and meant for your family can only pay its face amount once. Decide which obligation each policy serves.
Your partner’s policy may not protect your family
In a cross-purchase, the policy your partner owns on you pays your partner, who uses it to buy your share. That money goes to your estate as the purchase price, not as extra protection on top of it.
Needs worksheet
| Need | Amount | Already covered by which policy? |
|---|---|---|
| Family income replacement | ||
| Mortgage and personal debts | ||
| Business debt you guarantee | ||
| Buyout funding | ||
| Key person loss to the business | ||
| Total gap |
What to bring to the review
- A list of obligations
- Every existing policy, with owner and beneficiary
- Any assignments to lenders
- Your buy-sell agreement
- Available assets
Mistakes that cost people later
- × Adding business value, debt and key person loss without checking for overlap.
- × Counting a lender-assigned policy as family protection.
- × Assuming your partner’s policy on you protects your family.
Questions people ask
How much coverage do I need for my family and my business?+
Add up each need separately, then subtract what existing policies already cover for that specific need.
Should business debt be included?+
If you personally guarantee it, or the business can’t survive it, yes, as its own line.
Can one policy serve several purposes?+
Only up to its face amount once. Decide in writing which obligation it covers.
Am I counting the same need twice?+
Common if a policy is assigned to a lender or earmarked for a buyout. The worksheet catches it.
Does my partner’s coverage protect me?+
It funds your partner’s purchase of your share, which pays your estate the price, not extra on top.
