Survivorship (second-to-die) life insurance in NJ
Survivorship life insurance covers two people, usually spouses, under one policy and pays the death benefit after the second death.
It is used to give heirs cash when an estate, a family business or real estate would otherwise have to be sold or borrowed against.
Who it’s for
- Couples whose estate is mostly a business, real estate or other illiquid assets
- Families planning to keep a business or property in the family
- Couples where one spouse is harder to insure alone
How survivorship coverage works
Because the insurer pays only after both insureds die, premiums are often lower than two individual permanent policies for the same death benefit.
Policies are often owned by an irrevocable life insurance trust (ILIT) so proceeds are handled under the estate plan. Your attorney sets up the trust before the policy is issued.
Common uses
- Paying estate settlement costs and any estate or inheritance taxes
- Equalizing inheritances when one child takes over the business or property
- Funding a charitable gift while still leaving assets to heirs
Our 5-step process
How we place survivorship (second-to-die) in NJ
You start here
Life Planning Review
Start a Life Planning Review and tell us what the estate holds and what heirs will need cash for.
What we need
- A rough picture of the estate: business, real estate, investments and debts
- Your attorney’s and CPA’s contacts and any existing estate plan or trust
- Existing life policies on either spouse
- Who should own the policy (often a trust) and the beneficiaries
- Dates of birth for both people
- Health details are never collected through the website; anything medical is discussed privately after you start.
- 2
Coverage design
Kevin coordinates the amount with your attorney’s and CPA’s estate projections and designs for lifetime guarantees, with trust ownership set up first if the plan calls for it.
- 3
Application & underwriting
Both people apply; underwriting typically includes exams and records for each, plus financial documentation for larger amounts.
- 4
Offer review
You review the approved classes for both insureds, the premium and the guaranteed death benefit before accepting.
- 5
Policy delivery & setup
The owner (often the trust) signs delivery forms, premium funding is set up, and beneficiaries are confirmed with your attorney.
Mistakes that cost people later
- × Buying the policy personally when the estate plan calls for trust ownership
- × Not coordinating the amount with the attorney’s and CPA’s estate projections
- × Choosing a design without lifetime guarantees when the goal is a permanent need
Questions people ask
When does survivorship life insurance pay?+
After the second of the two insured people dies.
Can we get survivorship coverage if one of us has health issues?+
Often more readily than an individual policy, because the insurer considers both lives. Underwriting still reviews both people.
Who should own a survivorship policy?+
Often an irrevocable life insurance trust, but it depends on your estate plan. Your attorney should decide the ownership.
Does New Jersey tax life insurance?+
Treatment depends on ownership, beneficiaries and current law. Your CPA or attorney should confirm how it applies to your estate.
