Final expense insurance in NJ
Final expense insurance is a small whole life policy, often in the range of a few thousand to tens of thousands of dollars, meant to pay for a funeral, burial or cremation and final bills.
Many policies use simplified underwriting (a few health questions, no exam); guaranteed-issue versions accept applicants regardless of health but usually limit the benefit for the first years.
Who it’s for
- Older adults who want to cover funeral costs so family doesn’t have to
- People who don’t need a large policy but want permanent coverage
- Applicants who may not qualify for fully underwritten coverage
Simplified issue vs. guaranteed issue
| Simplified issue | Guaranteed issue | |
|---|---|---|
| Health questions | A short questionnaire | None |
| Medical exam | No | No |
| Benefit in early years | Usually full benefit from day one if approved | Often limited (graded) for the first years, except accidental death |
| Premium | Lower | Higher for the same amount |
How much coverage
- Estimate funeral, burial or cremation costs where you live, plus final medical and household bills
- Check whether you already have coverage, including any group life
- Name a beneficiary who will handle the arrangements

Coverage design
Kevin checks whether simplified issue (full coverage from the start) is likely to fit before considering guaranteed issue, and sizes the benefit to your estimate.
- 3
Application & underwriting
Simplified issue uses a short health questionnaire and database checks; guaranteed issue has no health questions. No exam either way.
- 4
Offer review
You confirm the benefit, the premium and whether any graded period applies before accepting.
- 5
Policy delivery & setup
You sign the delivery forms, set up premium payment, and give your beneficiary a copy or the policy details.
Mistakes that cost people later
- × Choosing guaranteed issue when you could qualify for simplified issue with full day-one coverage
- × Not understanding the waiting (graded) period
- × Buying more small policies than needed instead of one that fits
- × Not telling the beneficiary the policy exists
Questions people ask
What is final expense insurance?+
A small whole life policy designed to cover funeral costs and final bills. It stays in force for life as long as premiums are paid.
Is there a waiting period?+
Guaranteed-issue policies commonly limit the benefit for natural-cause deaths during the first years. Simplified-issue policies often pay the full benefit from the start once approved.
Do I need a medical exam?+
No. Final expense policies use a short questionnaire (simplified issue) or no health questions at all (guaranteed issue).
Can I buy final expense insurance for a parent?+
Generally the insured person must consent and sign the application, and you need an insurable interest. Ask us about your situation.
