Whole life insurance in NJ
Whole life insurance is permanent coverage with a level premium, a guaranteed death benefit and guaranteed cash value that grows over time, as long as premiums are paid.
It costs more than term for the same death benefit; people choose it when the need is lifelong or when guarantees matter more than the lowest premium.
Who it’s for
- People who need coverage that lasts for life, such as estate liquidity or a lifelong dependent
- Business owners using permanent coverage in a buy-sell or executive benefit plan
- Savers who value guarantees and a predictable premium
How whole life works
Each premium pays for the insurance and builds cash value, which grows on a guaranteed schedule. Policies from mutual companies may also pay dividends, which are not guaranteed.
You can usually borrow against the cash value. Unpaid loans and interest reduce the death benefit, and a policy can lapse if loans grow too large.
Premium-payment options
- Pay for life: the lowest annual premium
- Limited pay (for example 10-pay or to age 65): higher premiums for fewer years, then paid up
- Some policies allow additional paid-up additions to build cash value faster
Whole life vs. universal life
| Whole life | Universal life | |
|---|---|---|
| Premium | Fixed | Flexible within limits |
| Cash value growth | Guaranteed schedule (plus any dividends) | Credited rate or index-linked; varies |
| Death benefit | Guaranteed | Depends on design and funding |
| Best fit | Guarantees and simplicity | Flexibility or lower-cost lifetime guarantees (GUL) |
Our 5-step process
How we place whole life insurance in NJ
You start here
Life Planning Review
Start a Life Planning Review and describe the lifelong need and how you want to pay premiums.
What we need
- What the coverage is for and why it needs to last for life
- How long you’d like to pay premiums (for life, 10 years, to 65)
- Existing life policies and their latest statements
- Who will own the policy (you, a trust, a business) and the intended beneficiaries
- Date of birth
- Health details are never collected through the website; anything medical is discussed privately after you start.
- 2
Coverage design
Kevin compares payment designs and carriers, separates guaranteed values from non-guaranteed dividends, and flags ownership questions for your attorney or CPA.
- 3
Application & underwriting
You apply with the selected carrier. Larger permanent policies typically involve a paramedical exam, records and, at higher amounts, financial documentation.
- 4
Offer review
You review the approved class, premium and illustration, focusing on the guaranteed columns, before accepting.
- 5
Policy delivery & setup
You sign delivery forms, set up payment, confirm owner and beneficiaries, and schedule annual statement reviews.
Mistakes that cost people later
- × Buying whole life when the need is actually temporary
- × Treating projected dividends as guaranteed
- × Borrowing heavily without tracking how loans affect the death benefit
- × Surrendering in the early years, when cash value is often lower than premiums paid
Questions people ask
Is whole life insurance worth it?+
It depends on the need. For a lifelong obligation or when guarantees matter, it can fit well. For a need that ends in 20 years, term usually provides more coverage for the premium.
Are whole life dividends guaranteed?+
No. Dividends depend on the insurer’s results. The guaranteed values are shown separately in the illustration.
Can I borrow from my whole life policy?+
Usually yes. Loans accrue interest and reduce the death benefit if not repaid, and large loans can cause the policy to lapse.
Can a business own whole life insurance?+
Yes, for purposes like buy-sell funding or executive benefits. Your CPA should confirm the tax treatment of the structure.
